Competitive intelligence for premium salons

You know your prices.
Do you know your margin?

Most salon owners set prices by instinct and find out how they compare by accident. ShearMargin watches your district every week — every published price, every review, every competitor's momentum — and tells you where the margin is hiding and what to change first.

What it is

Not a report. An operating dashboard.

Reports go stale the day you read them. ShearMargin keeps running — so the answer is current the moment you need it.

A live dashboard

Your district is re-swept every week, so your rank, your competitors' prices and their momentum are current when you log in — not a snapshot of last quarter.

An AI you can ask

Ask your market anything in plain language. Who raised prices. What a balayage should cost on your block. Why you slipped last month. Answers grounded in your own data.

Actions, not charts

Every sweep produces a ranked list of moves worth making, with the revenue impact attached. The output is a decision, not homework.

Sample analysis

An independent salon in Manhattan's Flatiron district

3/28
District rank against measured competitors
68%
Review reply rate — market median is 33%
$55
Revenue per chair-hour on haircuts — their lowest
+26
Momentum gained by a nearby rival in 20 months
Pricing gap. They publish stylist grades but not grade pricing. The market median for a priced grade step is worth 25% more per booking.
Category gap. Priced in 8 of 16 service categories. Every unpriced category they already perform is revenue a client can't self-select into.
Timing gap. Their offers ran in August. Market demand and competitor offer volume both peak in February and June.
What it measures

The things nobody in your market is tracking.

In the Manhattan study, 23 of 28 salons published no service durations at all — meaning not one of them could say what an hour of chair time was worth.

Price positioning

Every published price across your district, mapped against yours — by service, by stylist grade, by category. See where you're under-charging and where you're out of range.

Revenue per chair-hour

The number most salons never calculate. Which services actually earn their time, and which high-ticket services are quietly your worst performers.

Competitive momentum

A 20-month trend line on every salon near you. Who's gaining ground, who's slipping, and what changed at the turning point.

Review intelligence

What clients actually say — yours and your competitors'. The specific themes costing you reviews, broken out and ranked.

Demand signals

What your market asks for versus what you sell. Service-level demand, seasonal timing, and the gaps nobody in your district is filling.

Visibility benchmarks

Your reach, reply rate and engagement against the salons you compete with — and the quick wins that move them fastest.

Pricing

One extra booking a month and it's paid for.

At a $200 median service, the Salon Plan covers itself on a single additional client. Everything past that is margin you weren't capturing.

Questions

The short answers.

Where does the data come from?

Public sources — published price lists, Google reviews, social presence and listing data across every salon in your district. We build the competitive set around your address, typically 25–30 salons drawn from a much larger registry, then re-sweep it weekly.

How is this different from my booking software?

Your booking system knows what happens inside your salon. It has no idea what the salon four blocks away charges, whether they just raised prices, or why they're gaining ground on you. ShearMargin only looks outward.

What do I actually get in the free snapshot?

Your competitive score, your rank in your district, and the single biggest gap we find, with the revenue impact attached. It's a real finding, not a teaser — it just doesn't update.

How long before it's useful?

The first read lands within a few days of signing up. The quick wins are usually immediate — in the Manhattan sample, the most common one was pricing stylist grades that salons already advertise but never priced, worth about 25% more per booking at the market median.

Can I cancel?

Any time, and the annual plan is optional. We'd rather you stay because the weekly sweep keeps being worth it.
